Lowestoft Town Council is in the process of developing its internal structures and recruiting the staff to enable to council to carry out its duties for the people of Lowestoft. The first two key people that we are looking for are a Town Clerk and a Deputy Town Clerk/Responsible Finance Officer. The Town Clerk will be the senior member of council staff and the Deputy will be mainly responsible for the council’s finance as well as covering for the Town Clerk as required. Both of these roles will be instrumental in the development of this brand new council and helping the elected councillors serve, promote and work for Lowestoft.
The 1st of October is Silver Sunday. This is a national initiative that is described (on their website) as an opportunity to ‘pause and think about older people and celebrate their contribution to society’ with the aim of drawing attention to the problem of loneliness amongst older people. Past events – all of which have been free of charge to participants – have included a Mad Hatter’s Tea Party, Silver circuit training, Zumba classes, cricket, ballet, martial arts and tea dances. Other ideas include dance lessons, theatre trips, museum tours, coffee mornings or intergenerational activities organised in conjunction with schools – anything goes as long as it brings older residents together. You can find out more at https://silversunday.org.uk/.
A rare chance to view the inside of Lowestoft Town Hall. The newly formed Town Council has agreed to open the building for guided tours during Heritage Open Days on the 9th and 10th of September. The Town Hall is an iconic building on the High Street that features a council chamber with stained glass windows, and the town’s clock and curfew bell that still sounds to this day.

Town councillors have opened the doors of Lowestoft's historic Town Hall in their first step towards exploring the options for its future use. The Town Council wants to make the right decisions about its guardianship of this important building for current and future generations and will be carefully preparing the way for bringing it back into use, taking account of the views of local people. The first tour of the site took place on 5 July 2017.
A new Local Plan for the Waveney district is being prepared. The First Draft Local Plan will include the preferred location for new homes, employment land and community uses, and policies which will be used to help determine planning applications. The District Council intends to publish the First Draft Plan for 8 weeks public consultation. Final dates are to be confirmed but they are aiming for Friday 28 July to Friday 22 September 2017 (8 weeks). The First Draft Plan will be considered by the District Council’s Cabinet meeting on Wednesday 12 July. The agenda will be published on their website www.eastsuffolk.gov.uk 5 working days prior to the meeting.
