Lowestoft Town Council
A large group gathered today outside the Town Hall at midday to hold a one-minute silence and to see the Ukrainian Flag raised. The group included a large number of Ukrainian refugees who have been supported and accommodated in the area thanks to the work of Waveney Hosts.
The short ceremony, which marked the one-year anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, included a speech from Ukrainian refugee Inna which was read in both English and Ukrainian.
Lowestoft Town Council would like to express their thanks to Froggy Hire Ltd who donated their time to assist with the raising of the Ukrainian Flag.

The Annual Assembly for the Town is taking place at Hamilton House on Thursday 2 March, 6pm. This is a chance to hear from different organisations and authorities on what is going on in the town, and to ask questions.
Some of the organisations have submitted written reports in advance on the meeting. These have been published on our website alonside the agenda.
Everyone is welcome to attend to find out more about what is going on in Lowestoft. If you have any questions for any of the organisations or local authorities, these can be submitted in advance to admin@lowestofttowncouncil.gov.uk
The meeting will also include information on the Neighbourhood Development Plan. This is currently out for public consultation. More information can be found on our website.
The gables on the Denes Oval wall have been removed due to urgent health and safety concerns. All the components are being stored and will be reused when the wall is repaired in full.
On 24th February 2022, Russia invaded Ukraine in a major escalation of the Russo-Ukrainian War, which began in 2014. The invasion has caused tens of thousands of deaths on both sides and has instigated Europe's largest refugee crisis since World War II.
To mark the one year anniversary of this, Lowestoft Town Council will be raising the Ukrainian Flag at Lowestoft Town Hall on Friday 24th February 2023, at 12noon.
A short ceremony will take place at Compass Street Pocket Park, just opposite the Town Hall.

Lowestoft Town Council’s ‘Love Parks Week” campaign was recognised on a national level at the Keep Britain Tidy local authority Network Awards which took place in Liverpool on Thursday 9th February 2023.
The ‘Love Parks’ Award recognises the efforts put in by councils and organisations around the UK to celebrate their green spaces during Love Parks Week, which was celebrated in July-August 2022. Lowestoft Town Council’s online awareness campaign was shortlisted in the final three after hundreds of nominations within its closely contested category, which was eventually won by Southend-On-Sea City Council.
The campaign aimed to highlight a number of parks around Lowestoft, raising awareness of their history and the care taken by Lowestoft Town Council to ensure that the parks can be enjoyed by everyone. Much of the engagement during the campaign fed into the Neighbourhood Development Plan Open Green Spaces document stakeholder consultation which looks to provide protection for the parks and open spaces that the people of Lowestoft cherish in different ways.
Before the awards Councillor Alan Green, Mayor of Lowestoft said: “I am delighted that our Love Parks Week campaign has been recognised on a national level. As the Town Council, we take great pride in our parks and open spaces across Lowestoft so to see our efforts being publicised nationally is a great achievement that the whole town should be proud of.”
A Keep Britain Tidy spokesperson said “Our Network Awards celebrate the most innovative litter, waste and space solutions developed by local authorities, often with the incredible collaboration and contribution of residents. Our hope is that these fantastic initiatives will inspire others to do the same.”
The Town Council are currently seeking public comments on the draft Neighbourhood Development Plan which includes many parks and open green spaces which are being designated for protection against future development. The plan can be read online or at the next drop-in session on Tuesday 21st February, 10am-12noon, with members of the public encouraged to give feedback on the draft policies and if there are any other areas of local green spaces that should be protected.

Lowestoft Town Council has instructed contractors to undertake essential groundworks between 7th-9th February at Britten Field Open Space. There may be some noises associated with the work being undertaken during this time.
Works will be taking place on these days between 9am-5pm.
