Tackling Fly-Tipping Together

Fly-tipping remains an issue in communities across the country, and unfortunately Lowestoft is no exception.

From discarded furniture and mattresses to unwanted household appliances, illegally dumped waste can have a significant impact on our parks, open spaces and neighbourhoods. Not only does it spoil the appearance of places that residents and visitors enjoy, but it also takes valuable time and resources to investigate and remove.

During Fly-Tipping Fortnight (12th-25th October), Lowestoft Town Council shone a spotlight on the issue and highlighted how residents can help keep our town clean and welcoming for everyone.

The Reality of Fly-Tipping

Fly-tipping is more than just an eyesore.

Even a single item left in a public space can encourage further dumping, quickly turning a small problem into a much larger one. Once reported, teams must spend time arranging for the waste to be removed and ensuring the area is safe and accessible again.

This means resources that could otherwise be used to maintain and improve parks, green spaces and community facilities must instead be directed towards clearing illegally dumped waste.

Busting Some Common Myths

There are several misconceptions when it comes to fly-tipping and waste disposal.

One of the most common is that “it’s only one item”. In reality, every item left behind has an impact and can encourage others to do the same.

Another myth is that “someone will clear it away”. While fly-tips are removed when reported, doing so requires time, effort and resources that could be used elsewhere in the community.

A third misconception is that getting rid of bulky items is difficult or expensive. For Lowestoft residents, there is a simple alternative.

Free Bulky Waste Collection

To help residents dispose of large household items responsibly, Lowestoft Town Council offers a FREE Bulky Waste Collection Service.

The service provides a convenient way to get rid of unwanted items such as furniture, mattresses and appliances without needing to transport them yourself.

By removing some of the barriers that can make disposing of bulky items difficult, the scheme helps residents choose a responsible and convenient option when clearing out unwanted household goods.

The Most Commonly Collected Items

As part of Fly-Tipping Fortnight, we asked residents to guess the items most commonly collected through the service.

The top five were:

🥇 Sofas

🥈 Double mattresses

🥉 Fridge freezers

4️⃣ King-size mattresses

5️⃣ Armchairs

These items make up a significant proportion of the collections carried out each year and demonstrate just how valuable the service is for residents looking to dispose of large household items responsibly.

Making a Positive Difference

Every collection completed through the bulky waste scheme represents an item that has been disposed of responsibly rather than becoming a potential problem elsewhere.

The service helps residents clear unwanted items conveniently while supporting wider efforts to keep Lowestoft’s streets, parks and public spaces clean and welcoming.

While tackling fly-tipping will always require a collective effort, providing practical solutions is an important part of that work.
