The 1st of October is Silver Sunday. This is a national initiative that is described (on their website) as an opportunity to ‘pause and think about older people and celebrate their contribution to society’ with the aim of drawing attention to the problem of loneliness amongst older people. Past events – all of which have been free of charge to participants – have included a Mad Hatter’s Tea Party, Silver circuit training, Zumba classes, cricket, ballet, martial arts and tea dances. Other ideas include dance lessons, theatre trips, museum tours, coffee mornings or intergenerational activities organised in conjunction with schools – anything goes as long as it brings older residents together.
