Lowestoft Town Council Launches Black History Month Creative Writing and Visual Arts Competition 2025

Lowestoft Town Council is proud to announce the launch of its annual Black History Month Creative Writing and Visual Arts Competition, inviting young people across the town to take part in a meaningful celebration of Black history, culture, and creativity.

This year’s theme, “Standing Firm Against Injustice”, marks the 60th anniversary of the Race Relations Act 1965 — the first legislation in the UK to ban racial discrimination in public places. The Act was a landmark moment in the journey towards equality and justice, and the theme encourages participants to reflect on its legacy and the ongoing importance of standing up against injustice in all its forms.

The competition is open to local young people, who are invited to submit original pieces of creative writing or visual artwork inspired by Black history and the 2025 theme. Entries can explore historical events, personal stories, cultural achievements, or contemporary reflections — all through the lens of creativity and expression.

Winning entries will be showcased at an awards ceremony in November and celebrated for their creativity, insight, and contribution to this important conversation.

Cllr Nasima Begum, Mayor of Lowestoft, said: “This year’s theme reminds us of how far we’ve come and how far we still have to go. We hope this competition inspires young people to explore the stories of those who have stood firm against injustice and to express what that means to them today.”
