Lowestoft Town Council is proud to announce that two outstanding local historians, Ivan Bunn and David Butcher, will be awarded the Honorary Freedom of the Town—the highest civic honour the Council can bestow.
The award recognises individuals whose contributions have made a lasting and meaningful difference to the community. Both Ivan and David have dedicated many decades to preserving, sharing and enriching Lowestoft’s history, helping generations better understand the town’s heritage and identity.
A special civic ceremony will take place on Friday 12 June, 12noon at Sparrows Nest Gardens to confer this honour, and members of the public are warmly invited to attend and be part of this significant moment for the town.
Ivan Bunn is widely known across Lowestoft for his passion for history and his ability to bring it to life. From his work supporting students and staff at Denes High School to his time at the Lowestoft Record Office, Ivan has played a vital role in making local history accessible and engaging.
Through his research, talks, guided walks, and community activities, he has helped countless people discover new perspectives on the town’s past. His work often blends history and folklore, capturing imaginations and connecting local stories to wider historical events.
Ivan has also contributed his expertise to key heritage initiatives, including the Town Hall project, ensuring that Lowestoft’s story continues to be shared for future generations.
David Butcher has spent decades deepening understanding of Lowestoft’s history through his research, teaching, and writing. A respected lecturer and historian, he has shared his knowledge both locally and at the University of East Anglia, inspiring others to take an interest in the past.
His published work—particularly on the town’s fishing industry—has preserved the voices and experiences of those whose lives were shaped by the sea. Through careful research and storytelling, David has ensured that these important histories are not lost.
In addition to his individual achievements, David has worked collaboratively on local history projects and contributed to the Town Hall heritage work, helping shape how Lowestoft’s story is presented in the future.
This ceremony is an opportunity for the community to come together and recognise the people who have played such a vital role in preserving Lowestoft’s heritage.
Lowestoft Town Council looks forward to welcoming residents to this special occasion as the town honours two individuals who have given so much to its history and cultural life.
