Lowestoft Town Council has proudly awarded the prestigious Honorary Freedom of the Town to Ivan Bunn and David Butcher in recognition of their exceptional contributions to preserving and sharing the town’s history.
The award, the highest honour the Town Council can bestow, is reserved for individuals who have made a lasting and meaningful impact on the community. The honour was presented at a special ceremony held this afternoon at Sparrows Nest Gardens, in front of a large crowd of residents, guests, and supporters, where the Mayor paid tribute to both recipients for their decades of dedication to Lowestoft’s heritage.
The Mayor of Lowestoft said:
“Ivan Bunn and David Butcher have each given so much to preserving and sharing the story of our town. Their passion, knowledge, and generosity have helped generations of people better understand Lowestoft’s past, and their contribution will continue to benefit our community for years to come.”
Ivan Bunn has long been a familiar and valued figure in Lowestoft. Through his work at Denes High School, the former Lowestoft Record Office, and his many talks, guided walks, and community activities, he has inspired generations to engage with the town’s rich past.
A gifted storyteller and researcher, Ivan has brought local history to life in an engaging and accessible way. His work, including A Trial of Witches, has highlighted the wider significance of Lowestoft’s stories and helped place the town within a broader historical context.
More recently, Ivan has continued to contribute to the town’s future through his involvement in the Town Hall project and the Heritage Focus Group.
David Butcher has dedicated his career to deepening understanding of Lowestoft and its people. A respected teacher and lecturer, both locally and at the University of East Anglia, he has inspired many to take an interest in history and heritage.
His published work, particularly on Lowestoft’s fishing industry, has preserved the voices and experiences of those whose lives were shaped by the sea. Through his writing, David combines academic rigour with a deep respect for the community, ensuring that important aspects of the town’s history are not lost.
He has also contributed his expertise to the Town Hall project, helping to safeguard Lowestoft’s heritage for future generations.
Together, Ivan Bunn and David Butcher have helped generations better understand Lowestoft’s past, its people, and its identity. Their work continues to enrich the cultural life of the town and strengthen the connection between its history and its future.
On behalf of the Council and the people of Lowestoft, we offer our heartfelt thanks to both recipients for their extraordinary contributions.
